Float is designed to help students manage essays, reading deadlines, and focused study time. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

When you use Float, we may collect the following information:

Account information
This may include your name, email address, profile details, and sign-in method, such as Apple, Google, or email login.

Float activity
This includes information you add to the app, such as essay titles, word counts, reading goals, book titles, page counts, deadlines, progress, and completed tasks.

Out of Sight activity
If you use Out of Sight, we may collect information about the times you join, the groups you create or join, friends you connect with, nudges you send or receive, and your study status.

Notifications
We may use your notification preferences to send reminders about deadlines, study sessions, nudges, and Out of Sight activity.

Device and usage information

We may collect basic technical information such as device type, app version, crash reports, performance data, and how the app is used. This helps us improve Float and fix issues.

Subscription information
If you subscribe to Float, your payment is handled by Apple or Google. We do not receive your full payment card details. We may receive subscription status information so we can unlock paid features.

2. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your Float account

  • Calculate daily essay word targets and reading page targets

  • Save your deadlines, progress, and study activity

  • Power Out of Sight sessions, groups, friends, and nudges

  • Send reminders and notifications, where you have allowed them

  • Provide customer support

  • Improve app performance, features, and reliability

  • Keep Float safe, secure, and working properly

  • Manage subscriptions and access to paid features

3. What other users can see

Some parts of Float are social. If you use Out of Sight, your connected friends or group members may be able to see your name, profile details, selected study times, and whether you have gone Out of Sight.

We do not show your essay titles, reading goals, deadlines, or private progress to other users unless we clearly add a sharing feature and you choose to use it.

4. Sharing your information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share limited information with trusted service providers who help us run Float, such as cloud hosting, authentication, analytics, crash reporting, notifications, and subscription services.

We may also share information if required by law, to protect our users, or to protect the security of Float.

5. How long we keep your information

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as long as needed to provide Float’s services.

If you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or anonymise your personal information unless we need to keep certain information for legal, security, or accounting reasons.

6. Your choices and rights

You can update or delete some of your information inside the app.

Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you

  • Correct inaccurate information

  • Request deletion of your information

  • Object to or restrict certain uses of your information

  • Request a copy of your information

  • Withdraw consent where we rely on consent

  • Make a complaint to a data protection authority

In the UK, you can contact the Information Commissioner’s Office if you have concerns about how your data is handled. The ICO guidance says users should be told about their information rights and how to complain.

7. Notifications

Float may send notifications about essay deadlines, reading deadlines, study sessions, nudges, groups, and Out of Sight activity.

You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information. However, no app or online service can be completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children and students

Float is designed for students and productivity use. If you are under the age required to use online services in your country, you should only use Float with permission from a parent or guardian.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make important changes, we will update the date at the top of this policy and may notify you in the app.
